Father Popiełuszko Statue in Greenpoint Vandalized
A statue of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko was vandalized in Greenpoint, Brooklyn yet again. The legendary solidarity priest who helped to abolish communism and fought for the freedom of Polish and Easter European people was murdered by the communist regime in 1984. The Statue in Greenpoint was unveiled in his honor in 1990 and the grand unveiling was attended by 11,000 people including many Solidarity freedom fighters who came to America after being expelled from communist Poland at the time. The Statue was devastated many times and now the Polish community is asking for 24 hour monitoring of Popieluszko Square in Greenpoint.
